In Webster's dictionary a curse is defined as: "a cause of great harm or misfortune."   In the following verses Elohim's Word is warning us of certain consequences of our actions.  Like a good father seeks to protect his children by teaching them right from wrong YEHOVAH has provided the same in His word.  In the verses below (KJV) the title "the "LORD" has been changed for you to "YEHOVAH," G_d has been changed to Elohim, the words of the Father are in red, and bold emphasis added (book order based on Hebrew Tanakh and Greek New Testament):
Exodus 23:21
Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him.
And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.
If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear* this glorious and fearful name, YEHOVAH THY ELOHIM; Then YEHOVAH will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.
YEHOVAH will not spare him, but then the anger of YEHOVAH and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and YEHOVAH shall blot out his name from under heaven.

I Kings
But if ye shall at all turn from following me, ye or your children, and will not keep my commandments and my statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other elohim, and worship them: Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:

II Kings
And he went up from thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of YEHOVAH. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Then YEHOVAH said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. Therefore thus saith YEHOVAH concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith YEHOVAH of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink. For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith YEHOVAH of hosts.

Thus saith YEHOVAH of hosts, the Elohim of Israel, of Ahab the son of Kolaiah, and of Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, which prophesy a lie unto you in my name; Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall slay them before your eyes; And of them shall be taken up a curse by all the captivity of Judah which are in Babylon, saying, YEHOVAH make thee like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire; Because they have committed villany in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours' wives, and have spoken lying words in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know, and am a witness, saith YEHOVAH.

But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto Adonai a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith YEHOVAH of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.
If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith YEHOVAH of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.

Pour out thy wrath upon the heathen that have not known thee, and upon the kingdoms that have not called upon thy name.
And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of Elohim, which hath power over these plagues: and they repented not to give him glory.

* "Fear" as used in this verse means "to have a reverential awe of." "Reverential" or "revered" means a "profound adoring awed respect."
